Arija A.'s Webshrine for Ecology
An ecological lifestyle involves making daily choices that minimise harm to the environment, conserve natural resources, reduce waste and pollution, and promote sustainability for the well-being of present and future generations.
You don't have to be the pefect ecologist: don't listen to nutjobs online. Do what you can, label yourself how you want, and ignore all the people who are saying that you are not good enough.
# Why Should I Care About Ecology?
Because every single action we take impacts the planet, environment, and us. If you need more reasons, by living an ecological lifestyle you:
- Protect biodiversity and ensure the survival of plants and animals
- Combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Preserve natural resources like water, soil, and forests
- Support healthier communities and ecosystems
- Leave a sustainable world for future generations
Statistics show that:
- Total CO2 emissions (fossil fuels + cement) reached a new record in 2024 - ~37.4 billion tonnes CO2 from fossil fuels and ~41.6 billion tonnes CO2 including land-use emissions (2024)
- Annual average atmospheric CO2 exceeded ~422-423 ppm in 2024 - the highest in human-recorded history (2024)
- Monitored wildlife populations have fallen sharply - the Living Planet Index reports an average ~69% decline in vertebrate populations (1970-2020 baseline used in the report) (Living Planet Report 2022)
- An estimated ~19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems every year (2025 UNEP estimate)
- Around one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally (~1.3 billion tonnes) (FAO assessment)
# How Can I Live an Ecological Lifestyle?
- Reduce energy consumption at home and work
- Choose sustainable and ethically sourced products
- Recycle, compost, and minimise waste wherever possible
- Use public transport, cycle, or walk instead of driving
- Adopt a plant-based or low-impact (e.g., if you want to continue eating meat, chicken is a better choice than beef for its impact) diet
- Support eco-friendly businesses and initiatives
- Contribute to circular economy
- Avoid wasting food: freeze and make stock instead!
- Avoid wasteful cryptocurrencies and avoid mass crypto histeria like now valueless NFTs
# How Do You Do It?
I make ecological choices everyday: was vegetarian for many years, then went vegan a while back, which has reduced my personal environmental impact and changed how I shop and cook. I plan meals to avoid waste, favour local, seasonal produce; when I buy clothes I prefer second-hand or durable pieces (though I will buy new shoes for fit and durability)
I try to minimise single-use items, sort recycling correctly and keep purchases deliberately small. At home I reduce energy use by using LEDs and mindfully managing heating. I choose walking or public transport when possible, etc.
