ok posted something substantial on linkedin what shall i do now
One of my not-so-hot takes is that the tech industry needs to stop exploiting the FOSS community's collective effort and humility as a stage for corporate stunts.
The trajectory of recent years has highlighted the ever-evolving trend of open-washing as we are watching corporations co-opt the language of software liberation whilst delivering none of the substance or commitment.
Two examples that come in context of the modern open-washing lanscape particularly portray this well:
First of all, with the rise of AI (particularly LLMs) we have seen a rise of "open weight" models without any training code, data crawlers, or anything else substantial other than a black box (the weights) to sell us the narrative of "democratised AI". There is no user liberation or genuine autonomy here - it is merely a corporate marketing stunt dressed up as benevolent community engagement.
Twitter's algorithm code dump back in 2023 also comes to mind. The reveal of Twitter's algorithm was a masterclass in PR over substance.
Simply dumping nearly 700k lines of lines onto a public repository does not make a project open source. Their dump arrived with zero commit history, was utterly devoid of documentation, completely missing any mechanism for meaningful community contribution, and was only a flood space for trolls, all while they were gaining valuable PR from the open-washing-led hype. Such behaviour fundamentally fails to align with even the most basic principles of FOSS ethics.
True FOSS is rooted in transparency and honesty. It requires the vulnerability to share one's working process, the integrity to welcome outside critique, and a commitment to user liberties.
What we are witnessing instead is the strip-mining of our community's hard-won ethical reputation simply to launder corporate track records. It's Wendy's twitter account clones all over again, albeit by dumping thousands of lines of slop and calling it "open source".
I honestly preferred when they just outright took our code over open-washing their slop...
today i was talking to a person and they found https://ad.ari.lt/ from which they found johnvertisements which ironically was down at the time, and still is now đ arivertisements win again
to follow up on #637, i also noticed that people feel entitled to your private lives mowadays, just because you choose to share some details, they believe they are entitled to know everything -- kr not even that, just because youre around them they believe they are entitled to your life, crazy work
i find the complete disregard for human dignity and privacy in the modern world disgusting, its widespread normalisation ( especially amongst the younger generations ) is concerning to me where humanitarian values are heading
ive noticed an alarming trend regarding this as i am fuether integrating into the adult world, in fact the first major red flags began showing around 9 th grade when i noticed a trend of not being allowed to preserve my privacy and faced with refusal once again when i ask to take down certain media that felt violating
moreover, people constantly stalking one another ( incl. me ) unveiled aother layer of distrust and discomfort around others -- feels like every step i take could lead to stalking, harassment, and a violation of boundries
but ye idk, it feels like mutual respect in the modern day and age is a nonexistent concept, and yet everyone is normalising it,, i dont particularly mind it as i do put stuff out there to be seen but at some point it turns into stalking rather than curiosity
my latin teacher taught me this phrase : "saccus vacuus" -- it means "empty sack" and can be used as an insult to basically call someone a loser in latin
i feel like saccuus vacuus today it is 10 pm only now have i been able to get out of bed, there is a massacre going on inside of me đĨ
we are doing some trans activism in the following months, tired of this country treating my existence as a clinical insanify i have to self-discriminate and beg for,, all progress is being led by activists and courts all while the government is turning a blind eye
lithuania has been nothing but ignorant of trans peoples rights since 2007, it took them 15 years just to make the name change process not require expensive and costly court procedures and they still gatekept it behind a "transsexualism" diagnosis, which ive been constantly suffering and dedignifying myself over since like 15, in an environment where i get death threats or other hatecrime just going kn walks
you still have to go through those same court procedures to change your legal gender on documents
this ridicule of trans people cannot continue uncalled out for, it is a clear ignorance of european justice court orders, systematic discrimination against transgender people, and a clear violation of human rights, especially for a country that positions itself as a progressive and freedom-loving nation "compared to regimes like balarus"
tomorrow i am contacting some orgs and i plan to escalate to government sectors, exchanges will be as public as i can allow it, because i cannot let this issue to be quietly swept under the rug,, if i managed to push for trans rights and recognition in school and work maybe i can do it for future national good as well
there are so many stupid arguments for why trans people shouldnt have human rights in lithuania and they believe every single one of those, scoring 5/32 on the TGEU index together with balarus, that lithuania pretends to be soooo much better than
one stupid example i heard from a politics person i know semupersonally, "well, my name could be trashcan, why wouldnt we place barriers on name changes" when cis people can just Go And Do That in like 1 day as long as they show theyre not trying to escape legal responsibility or sth
